Glossary of Key Terms

Understanding the terminology associated with claims benefits can be crucial. This glossary provides clear and concise definitions for common terms you may encounter during your application and benefits period.

Base Period

The "Base Period" is a specific timeframe (usually the first four of the last five completed calendar quarters before you filed your claim) used by the claims office to review your wages and determine if you earned enough to qualify for claims benefits and to calculate your weekly benefit amount.

Waiting Week

A "Waiting Week" is typically the first week of a new claims claim for which a claimant is eligible for benefits but does not receive payment. This week often serves as a deductible, similar to an insurance deductible, before payments begin.

Certification

"Certification" refers to the process of regularly informing the claims office that you are still unemployed, able and available for work, and actively seeking employment. This is usually done weekly or bi-weekly to receive your benefits.

Claimant

A "Claimant" is an individual who has filed an application for claims benefits, seeking financial assistance due to involuntary job loss. They are the primary recipient of the claims insurance program.

Weekly Benefit Amount (WBA)

The "Weekly Benefit Amount (WBA)" is the specific dollar amount an eligible claimant receives each week in claims benefits. This amount is typically calculated based on their earnings during the base period.

Extended Benefits (EB)

"Extended Benefits (EB)" are additional weeks of claims compensation that may be available to claimants after they have exhausted their regular claims benefits during periods of high claims, as determined by federal and state law.
